hi all, i am wondering whether there has been any discussion of turning our railway into a bike path? it could be a good way to connect local towns without having to ride on the roads.
http://www.railtrails.org.au/ what do people think of this idea? alternatively, maybe it would be better to hold out hope that our railway might be reinstated as a functioning railway. what do people think about this?

Hi Vaiya – this idea has been raised before but never got any traction. It would be great explore the possibility. Newstead is about to commence the development of a community plan and bike trails, walking paths and connectivity will be an important theme I’m sure. A few of us are meeting next Monday at the RTC at 2pm re the community plan – you would be very welcome. In any case I’ll add the idea to our list and look forward to some future discussions on it.
      All the best, geoff

hi geoff, thanks for the reply. good to hear there’s been some interest in the idea in the past. apologies for not making it to the meeting. i only just just the message. have been reading up on bike trails. it seems they recommend taking up the tracks and sleepers to lay the trail. so unfortunately it would mean making a choice between trail or possible future railway.

Hi Vaiya – the community planning project will be kicking off over the next month or so. Initially there will be a loose committee structure designed to trawl for good ideas and input. Would be great to have you involved if time allows but either way the concept of trails and paths is sure to be a strong element of the plan.
    Cheers, geoff

Hi Geoff, sorry for the delay in replying. It would be great to be involved in the community planning project. Who should I contact? Thanks, Vaiya.
